About

Human factors expertise. Applied to everyday work.

Systems Innovation Lab is a human factors and operational systems consultancy. We help organisations understand recurring problems and improve the tasks, processes and decisions behind them, across quality, health, safety and environment. We work in the United Arab Emirates and Australia.

The principal

Dr Mohammed Aburumman
Founder & Principal Consultant

An industrial engineer and human-factors specialist with sixteen years across industry, consultancy, regulation and academia in the UAE and Australia.

He was Senior Specialist, Human Factors at WorkSafe Victoria, the Victorian work-health-and-safety regulator, working on systems and organisational human factors in its Ergonomics and Human Factors Unit. Before that he led a QHSE management-systems service line in consultancy and held project QHSE roles on major oil and gas construction. His doctorate, at the Monash University Accident Research Centre, developed a translational framework for safety culture in construction.

Qualifications

PhD, Monash University · postgraduate qualification in safety, risk and reliability engineering

Who we are

Specialist expertise, connected to your operation.

We combine human factors, systems thinking and human-centred design: understanding the work, tracing the conditions that shape it and developing changes with the people affected. Specialists in quality auditing, systems configuration, organisational psychology or process safety join where the project needs them.

Systems Innovation Lab Limited was incorporated in Abu Dhabi in September 2025 and is registered in Melbourne. The firm is recent; the practice behind it is sixteen years old, across industry, consultancy, a state safety regulator and a university research centre.

Where we work

United Arab Emirates and Australia. On site in both; remote where it makes sense.

Sectors we have worked in

Manufacturing and fit-out, contracting, oil and gas, healthcare, higher education, government and regulators. We agree the scope around the work, its risks and the requirements that apply.

What we work on

Tasks, procedures, handovers, management systems and the software that supports them.

Research and public reports

Research and public work you can examine.

Peer-reviewed research in safety science and injury prevention, including our principal's systematic review of whether workplace interventions improve safety culture, in Safety Science. The full list is on ORCID. Our principal has presented this systems work at Victorian Health and Safety Month, the Heads of Workplace Safety Authorities Forum and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia conference.

Two systems analyses published by a state regulator

Produced in WorkSafe Victoria’s Ergonomics and Human Factors Unit and published by the regulator. Both are free to read in full.

Our approach

Understand the difficulty. Change what creates it.

When a problem returns, we examine more than the written procedure. Can people obtain the information they need? Do they have time and authority to act? Does a handover happen early enough to change the outcome? These questions connect human factors to practical improvements.

We work with your people to develop and test changes, while respecting the requirements the work must meet. Research informs the approach; evidence from your operation determines the recommendation. A new procedure or training course may be part of the answer, but is not assumed to be the answer.

How we work

Three things worth knowing before a first conversation.

Our delivery method and working commitments are set out on the How we work page. These three come up in almost every first call, so they are here rather than in a proposal.

Scoped in writing, with an end

Day-rate or retainer, scoped in writing, with a defined finish rather than an open engagement, and a written proposal within five working days of the first conversation.

Client work stays confidential

We publish no client name, logo or testimonial without permission. Private client work is de-identified; released public work is linked to its source. References are shared with the client’s agreement.

A candid first conversation

If the problem is not a systems problem, or another practice is better placed to help, we would rather say so early than after a proposal.

Working languages

Delivery is in English. Where a procedure has to be read by the people who use it, we design the visual standard and work with your translators and your crews to test the result: in Arabic, Hindi, Urdu or whichever languages the line actually speaks.

Start with a conversation about what you need. Site access and further information are agreed where useful; you do not need to commission a diagnostic before discussing a focused piece of work.
